Libby Riddles
(1956 -  )

Libby Riddles was born on April 1st, 1956. When she was seventeen years old, she moved from Wisconsin to Alaska.  She became interested in sled dogs and liked watching mushers race (mushers are people who race with the dogs).  After a while, one of Libby’s friends convinced her to try mushing and she loved it.  She decided to begin training for the Iditarod.  The Iditarod is a dog race in Alaska that is over 1000 miles long.

In 1980, Libby finished 18th in the Iditarod and in 1981, she finished 20th.  She decided that in order to do better, she would have to raise her own dogs.  Libby became partners with Joe Garnie, and together they bred dogs and trained for the Iditarod. On March 20th, 1985, Libby Riddles fought her way through an intense blizzard to become the first woman to ever win the Iditarod!

Libby Riddles is still raising sled dogs and competing in dog races.  She is also a public speaker and an author.  She has written a couple of books about the Iditarod, called “Storm Run” and “Danger: The Dog Run Cat”.
