Ada Hayden
(1884 - 1950)
Born on August 14, 1884, Ada Hayden was a native of Ames,
Iowa. With her father’s
encouragement, Hayden received a bachelor’s degree in botany from the School
of Botany in Missouri. In 1910, she
went on to obtain her master’s degree in botany from Washington University in
St. Louis, and then became the first women to receive her doctorate at Iowa
State College now called Iowa State University.
Hayden became an instructor in Botany from 1910 – 1918 at Iowa State and then became an Assistant Professor of Botany from 1919 – 1950. Hayden worked until her death in 1950 teaching and doing research.
