In 1933, Etta Z. Falconer was born in Tupelo, Mississippi.  She graduated in  Fisk University in 1953 and received her Masters Degree from the University of Wisconsin in 1954.  She then became a teacher at Okolona College where she taught for 9 years.  Falconer became an Assitant Professor at Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia.  While teaching here, she attended Emory University to earn her Ph.D.  She completed her Ph.D in 1969 and published her thesis, which was on “Isotopy Invariants in Quasigroups.”

Falconer then obtained a job as an assistant professor of mathematics at Norfolk State University.  However, she only worked there for one year because she decided to return to Spelman College in 1972 as an associate professor of mathematics and the chairperson of the Mathematics Department. 

Because she has had such a positive impact on the mathematical field, Falconer has received many awards.  These include a NSF Faculty Fellow (1967-69), the UNCF Distinguished Faculty Award (1986-87), Spelman's Presidential Award for Excellence in Teaching (1988), Spelman's Presidential Faculty Award for Distinguished Service (1994), NAM's Distinguished Service Award (1994), AWM's Louis Hay Award for contributions to Mathematics Education (1995), QEM's Giants in Science Award (1995) and the Honorary Degree: Doctorate of Science, University of Wisconsin-Madison (1996).
