Ellen Weber
(1962 - )
Mary Ellen Weber was born on August 24, 1962 in Cleveland,
Ohio, and grew up in Bedford Heights, Ohio.
Mary received her Bachelor of Science degree in chemical engineering from
Purdue University in 1984 and received a Ph.D. in physical chemistry from the
University of California at Berkeley in 1988.
Mary began skydiving during college and has successfully
completed over 3,300 skydives. She
received a silver medal in the U.S. National Skydiving Championships and
participated in the world’s largest free fall formation with 297 people.
After graduate school, Mary received her pilot’s license.
After researching process in which to make new computer
chips for Texas Instruments, Mary applied to NASA and was selected to become an
astronaut in 1992. She has been on
two space flights and had logged over 450 hours in space. During her second flight, Mary conducted biotechnology
experiments dealing with colon cancer.
