New Team for Spring 2007:

Engineering Research Center on Structured Organic Particulate Systems (CSOPS)

Course Textbook:

Lima, Marybeth and Oakes, William. Service-Learning: Engineering in Your Community, Great Lakes Press, 2006.

Individual Readings and Reflections: Each student will complete a total of 8 readings and reflections during the semester (these replace the in-lab reflections). Please see the Individual Reading and Reflections for a schedule of the readings and reflections (epics.ecn.purdue.edu/forms/?formname=ind_refl). Reflections should be submitted to WebCT by the deadline stated on the schedule.

Semester Plan: The Semester Plan will now become the basis of the project progress reporting during the semester, replacing the midsemester and final reports. Instead, Project Leaders will be responsible for writing a Semester Plan Progress Update (SPPU) Memo which is addressed to the Project Partner at weeks 8, 12, and 15/16. The Project Partner Liaison is responsible for sending the SPPU Memos for all of the projects on his/her team to the Project Partner, whereas the Team Leader is responsible for sending the SPPU Memos to the advisor(s). Individual Memos: The Individual Memo will be used to report individual semester goals and accomplishments periodically during the semester, and will replace the Individual Goals and Assessment Spreadsheet we had used in the past. The Week 4 Individual Memo will be used to identify the Individual Semester Goals and report accomplishments during the first four weeks of the semester. The Weeks 8, 12, and 15/16 Individual Memos will be used to report significant accomplishments and, if needed, changes to the Individual Goals since the last memo. Individual Memos will be submitted via WebCT the weeks that they are due.

Grading Guidelines: We have developed more detailed Grading Guidelines which will be used as the basis for all of the assessments of individual and project work.

Updated Milestones Schedules for Spring 2007 for both New and Continuing Teams: There are two versions of the Milestones Schedule : one for continuing teams, and one for new teams.

Ambassador Program: EPICS is seeking experienced and enthusiastic EPICS students to be a part of our Ambassador program. You will be involved in recruiting activities and meetings with alumni and corporate representatives. See the EPICS Ambassador Program Overview for more information. Applications are due to Carla Zoltowski by Wednesday, January 17th at 5 pm.

ECN Accounts Reminder: You will need an ECN login to access all of the EPICS computers, Share Point Server, and team shares. ECN accounts are being created based on the course roster, but you still must complete an ECN Account Authorization form. Please return the form to Nick in EE 337B ASAP (during the first lecture if possible). Please note that you may need to change your ITaP password before you are able to access your ECN account.

Equipment Request Form: Please complete the Equipment Request Form:to request a laptop or tablet computer for the semester by Friday, January 11th at 5 pm. Those students whose requests are approved in the initial evaluation will be notified by Wednesday, January 17th.

Online Outcome Survey: All students will need to complete the online outcome surveys at the beginning and end of the semester. You will receive an email when the link is available.

Summary of Lecture Requirements

REQUIRED Lectures:

- New EPICS students are required to attend the orientation (Week 1) lecture, the resources (Week 3) lecture, the Introduction to Design Process (Week 5) lecture, the Introduction to Project Management (Week 6) lecture, and the final lecture (Week 15).
- Returning EPICS students are required to attend the "What is New?" lecture (Week 1) and the final lecture (Week 15).
- Team Leaders, Project Leaders, and Project Partner Liaisons are required to attend their respective meeting on Week 3 either during lecture or the make-up time. If you are a "New student" and fulfilling one of these roles, attend the role meeting and watch the Resource Lecture from Week 3 on video by the due date listed above. You will receive credit for both.

Students registered for 1 credit must to attend a total of at least five lecture sessions, which must include all the required lectures.

Students registered for 2 credits are required to attend a total of ten lectures/skills sessions, which must include all the required lectures.

Students registered for 1 credit with a documented conflict with the lecture hour are required to accrue at least five (5) lecture credits via skills sessions and/or watching a recorded lecture before the due date via the Video Server. Students who have a class conflict with the scheduled EPICS lecture time must document this to their TA or to the Program Coordinator in the first week of the semester.
To receive credit for a videotaped lecture, complete the Online Lecture Make-Up Attendance Form before the due date listed above.

Students registered for 2 credits with a documented conflict with the lecture hour are required to accrue at least seven (7) lecture credits via skills sessions and/or watching a recorded lecture before the due date via the Video Server. Students who have a class conflict with the scheduled EPICS lecture time must document this to their TA or to the Program Coordinator in the first week of the semester.
To receive credit for a videotaped lecture, complete the Online Lecture Make-Up Attendance Form before the due date listed above.

Attendance will be taken at all lectures/skills sessions and will be posted on the myEPICS system. Failure to attend the required number of sessions will affect your grade. Any corrections to the lecture attendance records must be reported to EPICS Attendance epics-attendance@ecn.purdue.edu within two week of attendance posting for that lecture.

Lecture attendance credit may be earned by watching the videotape of a lecture via the EPICS Video Server if completed by the stated deadline. To receive credit for a videotaped lecture, access the lecture via the video server, watch the lecture, and complete the Online Lecture Make-Up Attendance Form. at http://epics.ecn.purdue.edu/forms/?formname=makeup_lecture_attendance. Please note: In order to receive credit, the make-up attendance form must be turned in within two weeks of the given lecture. Note that some lectures (e.g., the Best Practices sessions) are not videotaped.

Students may also earn lecture/skill session credit by completing an Advisor Approved Activity form.
