About Us

Started from Spring 2017; Current Semester: Fall 2018.

SMART Mission Statement: Purdue EPICS SmartCity’s mission is to modernize urban cities, as stated by The Internet of Things Agenda, “by using information and communication technologies to increase operational efficiency, share information with the public, and improve both the quality of government services and citizen welfare.”

SMART Technologies: Android Studios, Firebase

SMART Fall 2018 deliverable:

1) Application Development Team: Develop an accessible, informative, and reliable application for the citizens of the City of West Lafayette to report road hazards and relay that information to city engineers. Information will be updated when the hazard has been resolved.

2) Visualization Development Team: Design a website for the City of West Lafayette engineers to be able to locate road hazards on a map of the city that was created by the submission of information through the application. The city will be able to update information on the application by relaying information back when a hazard has been resolved.

Our Team

Application Development

The Application Development Team is designing a phone application that will allow citizens to be able to document and report road hazards seen around the city of West Lafayette. This information will be sent to the engineers at the City of West Lafayette.

Visualization Development

The Visualization Development Team is designing a website for the engineers at the City of West Lafayette to be able to filter and locate road hazards around the city. Using this information, the engineers will be able to go out and address the problem. Once the hazard has been completed, the website will update the application and relay the information back to the citizens.

Project Description

Develop engineering-designed solutions that integrate human behavior with cutting-end technology to better the efficiency, quality of life, and community. The goal of building a SmartCity is to improve the quality of life by providing systematic and more efficient way of management of urban systems. Purdue EPICS SmartCity has been assigned to develop a phone application and a website for the City of West Lafayette to use in the identification and resolution of road hazards. We have 2 Teams (Application Development and Website Development) each led by a Design Lead. A Project Manager, Project Archivist, Financial Officer, Webmaster, and Project Partner Liaison provides behind-the-scenes support/logistics for the entire SmartyCity group. Group disciplines representing multiculturalism and multi-disciplinary collaboration: industrial engineering, civil engineering, mechanical engineering, aeronautical engineering, biological engineering, math, physics, and actuarial science.

Project Partner

The City of West Lafayette Department of Engineering

Smart City is working with the City of West Lafayette Department of Engineering (3-5 city engineers) with Marcus Smith (assistant city engineer) being our primary contact. The Engineering department not only provides engineering guidance to the Mayor and other city departments, boards, and commissions but also oversees the City's projects concerning planning, design, construction, and maintenance of private/public works (includes but not limited to buildings, roads, storm drainage, sidewalks, and handicap accessibility). Primary city engineer responsibilities include: direction of engineering design for all public construction (approval of new construction and site inspection), plan/design/oversee capital public works projects (State Street renovation, Wabash River, etc.), maintaining the City's Capital Master Plan, maintain construction records, etc.
